🤔 What is a Hibiscus Margarita?
A Hibiscus Margarita is a tropical twist on the classic margarita. It uses hibiscus tea (also called Agua de Jamaica), which gives it a subtle tart and floral flavor.
Hibiscus tea is made from the dried flower bud of the Hibiscus plant. It's perfect for pool parties, barbecues, Cinco de Mayo, and brunch!
You can also make it during Christmas by pairing it with a traditional margarita for a fun red and green color scheme.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Dried Hibiscus Flowers - I couldn't find any dried hibiscus flowers at my local grocery store, but you may have better luck in your city. I ended up buying this bag of dried hibiscus flowers from Amazon.
Sugar - The Hibiscus tea will be bitter when you make it, so adding some sugar will help ease the bitterness. I used ½ cup of sugar in the hibiscus concentrate, giving me a balanced margarita taste. Use ⅔ cups for a sweeter version.
I used white granulated sugar. You can also use agave if you do use ⅓ cup of agave for every ½ cup of sugar.
Fresh Lime Juice - Limes have about 1oz of juice in each one of them; for this recipe, you will need six limes to make four margaritas, but it won’t hurt to have a few more on hand for garnish, or if your limes are a little smaller.
Silver Tequila - For margaritas, silver tequila (also called Blanco or Plata Tequila) is generally considered the better choice compared to gold tequila. Gold tequila has subtle notes of vanilla, caramel, or oak, which can clash with the citrusy and tart flavors of a margarita, so I wouldn't recommend it.
Optional - Add some Salt or Sugar to the rim of your cup!

Tip
- You can make the Hibiscus tea up to 5 days ahead of time.
- You can't use hibiscus tea bags in place of hibiscus flowers. If you can't find hibiscus flowers at your grocery store, you can get them on Amazon.
Best Tequila
There are many opinions on the best Tequila. Since you are mixing your tequila with a bunch of other flavors or ingredients, you don't have to go for the best or most expensive tequila. What's important is to look for 100% agave. Personally, Espolon Tequila Blanco is my go-to Tequila.
How to Make Hibiscus Margaritas

Party: If you making these for a party, I recommend making a pitcher of margarita.
Date Night: For a cute home date night, pair your margarita with Chicken Enchiladas, and a tres leches cake for dessert.
