What are Blood Orange Margaritas?
Blood Orange Margaritas take a classic margarita and add a fresh and vibrant twist to it. They still have tequila, lime juice, and orange liqueur, but they also have juice from blood oranges. This gives these margaritas a beautiful reddish-orange hue and a refreshing flavor and makes them a little sweeter than a classic margarita.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Tequila - For margaritas, silver tequila (also called Blanco tequila) is generally considered the better choice compared to gold tequila. Gold tequila has subtle notes of vanilla, caramel, or oak, which can clash with the citrusy and tart flavors of a margarita, so I wouldn't recommend it.
Fresh Juice from Blood Oranges - You can substitute regular oranges or navel oranges for blood oranges. However, the margarita will have a less vibrant color, a slightly different flavor profile, and won't be a blood orange margarita anymore.
Fresh Lime Juice - Limes have about 1oz of juice in each one of them. For this recipe, you will need six limes to make four margaritas, but it would not hurt to have a few more on hand for garnish or if your limes are a little smaller.
Orange Liqueur - I used Paisley & Sage triple sec for these margaritas. Orange liqueur and triple sec are the same thing. Triple Sec is a style of orange liqueur.
Simple Syrup - Simple syrup is optional. The fresh blood orange juice and the orange liqueur already give the margarita a slight sweetness. If you like a sweeter margarita, add about 1oz of simple syrup or agave nectar to your drink.
Garnishes - Classic options are salt or sugar for the rim and an orange slice or lime wedge. You can sprinkle Tajín chili lime seasoning for a spicy kick or add a dehydrated blood orange slice for an extra visual touch.

Common Questions
Should I use Cointreau or triple sec?
If you're looking to make the absolute best margarita, then Cointreau is the best choice for an orange liqueur. However, it can be a little pricy, especially if your store only has the big bottles. When I'm on a budget, I like to use Paisley & Sage triple sec in my margaritas; it’s a fourth of the cost of Cointreau.
Is triple sec and orange liqueur the same?
Yes, orange liqueur and triple sec are the same. Orange liqueur is a general term for a distilled spirit that contains orange flavor and sugar. Triple sec is a type of orange liqueur.
What is the best Tequila?
There is much debate about the "best" tequilas for margaritas. You don't necessarily need the top-shelf ones; what's most important is that your tequila is 100% agave. Personally, my go-to is Espolon Tequila Blanco.
