Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions. Gently shape each portion into a 5-inch patty about ¼-inch thick. Avoid overworking the meat to keep your burgers tender. Season both sides of the patties with salt and pepper.
Preheat a large cast iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add the avocado oil once the skillet is hot.
Place the patties in the skillet. Cook each side for 4 minutes for a well-done burger. (Note: The USDA recommends cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure safety.)
Once the burgers are cooked, transfer them to a plate and immediately top each patty with a slice of cheese. The heat from the patties will melt the cheese perfectly.
While the burgers are cooking, butter the buns. Place them cut side up on a baking sheet and toast under your oven’s broiler for 1–3 minutes, or until golden brown. Watch closely to avoid burning.
Layer your cheeseburgers on the toasted buns and add your favorite toppings.
Notes
The USDA advises cooking hamburgers to an internal temperature of 160°F to ensure safety. If you prefer a medium-cooked burger, use the freshest beef or grind your own to minimize risk.
