These warm and cheesy Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks are the ultimate weeknight comfort food. You only need a few simple ingredients and 30 minutes to make this cozy, comforting sandwich.
These cheesy, savory hot beef sandwiches are my go-to when I want a quick, cozy, indulgent sandwich for dinner. Best of all, they're super easy to make!
Once assembled, pop them into the oven for a couple minutes for a nice toasty taste. The slightly toasted bread paired with the melted, bubbly layer of cheese creates a perfectly satisfying bite every time.

Ingredients & Substitutions
- Onion - You can use white, yellow, or sweet onions, depending on your preference.
- Green Bell Pepper - I like to use green bell peppers for that classic cheesesteak flavor. Red, yellow, or orange bell peppers work just as well and offer a sweeter taste.
- Ground Beef - Use 90% lean ground beef so you can skip draining the fat. If you use 85% or 80% ground beef, just remember to drain the excess fat after cooking.
- Garlic Powder - If you don't have garlic powder, use onion powder or omit it altogether.
- Worcestershire Sauce - Adds depth and savory richness to the beef mixture. If you're out of Worcestershire sauce, use soy sauce, but reduce the amount of salt in the recipe.
- Provolone Cheese - Provolone is my top choice for a creamy, melty finish, but mozzarella works great too. For a spicier twist, try using pepper jack!
- Hoagie Rolls - Use four hoagie rolls (7” each) or cut a French baguette into four pieces.

How to Make Ground Beef Philly Cheesesteaks
Step 1 | Cook the Filling
Cook the diced onion, green bell pepper, and ground beef in a skillet until the vegetables are soft and the meat is browned.
Step 2 | Prep the Rolls
While the beef cooks, slice the hoagie rolls in half and arrange them on a baking sheet.
Step 3 | Add Cheese!
Once the beef mixture is done, stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Place half the provolone slices over the beef, reduce the heat to low, and let the cheese melt for about 2 minutes. Stir to combine.
Step 4 | Toast to Perfection
Spoon the beef mixture onto the rolls. Top each sandwich with the remaining cheese slices and bake for 3-5 minutes until the cheese is melted and the bread is lightly toasted.
Tips & Notes
Customize the Cheese – Provolone is classic, but feel free to switch it up with mozzarella, cheddar, or pepper jack to suit your taste.
Toast the Rolls – Lightly toasting the rolls in the oven adds an incredible crunch and makes the ground beef sandwiches taste at least 50% better.
Make it Your Own – Add mushrooms, jalapeños, or any other favorite veggies to the ground beef mixture!
Make It Ahead of Time!
Prep:
Chop the onions and bell peppers, and slice the rolls 2 days before.
You can also brown the ground beef and cook the veggies ahead of time. The cooked beef mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days or frozen for up to 3 months (thaw before assembling the sandwich).
Cook:
When you're ready to eat, reheat the beef mixture until warm. Then, assemble the sandwiches, add the cheese, and bake in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese melts and the bread is toasted.

- 1 green bell pepper diced
- 1 pound ground beef 90% lean
- ½ teaspoon table salt
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 8 oz provolone cheese
- 4 hoagie rolls 7” each or 1 French baguette, cut into 4 pieces
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, ground beef, salt, garlic powder, and black pepper. Cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are soft and the beef is browned.
- While the beef mixture cooks, slice the hoagie rolls in half (or cut the baguette into four 4” pieces and slice each piece in half) and place them on a baking sheet.
- Once the beef mixture is fully cooked, stir in the Worcestershire sauce. Lay half the slices of provolone cheese over the beef mixture and reduce the heat to low. Allow the cheese to melt, about minutes, then stir until combined.
- Use tongs to transfer the beef and cheese mixture evenly onto the prepared rolls.
- Place the remaining cheese on top of each sandwich. Bake in the preheated oven for 3-5 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the rolls are lightly toasted.
